Endangered Species Day – America
May 16th, 2008 is Endangered Species Day in the US. This is a national celebration of America’s commitment to the protection of wildlife in the US on the brink of extinction. Endangered Species Day also aims to educate the public about the importance of protecting America’s wildlife and how everyday actions can help save endangered species. Local events have been organised throughout the US.
Learning about endangered species leads to ELC fundraising initiative
This year, the four-year-old children in the St Catherine’s Early Learning Centre (Melbourne) have developed a passion for the animals of the world, in particular, endangered species. Through their research they wondered how they could make a difference to caring for and saving these animals. According to Chloe (photographed left), "We really want to help save animals which are nearly becoming extinct."
As part of their recent classwork, the children created some beautiful paintings of animals following their research. One of the parents of the girls kindly offered to have the children’s paintings reproduced on a sturdy shopping bag and a canvas suitable for hanging on the wall. The background of each illustration on the bags reflects each animal’s country of origin. Isabella (right) said, "I painted an elephant and now it is on the bag that we made so we can see it and remember that the elephants need our help".
These bags and canvases are for sale in the children’s set up ‘shop’ and proceeds will be directed to our charity. They can be ordered through the St Catherine’s ELC: telephone 03-9828 3020.
Celebrity Khaki Shirt
One of Wildlife Warriors' staunchest supporters is using her red carpet connections to collect celebrity signatures on a khaki shirt that will be offered for auction in 2008 for the benefit of our charity. While based on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Melanie works as a freelance TV reporter on US television and it's a role that sees her rubbing shoulders with a "who's who" of stage, screen and sport.
To date Melanie has collected over 80 prized signatures, including Grammy award-winners OK Go (pictured right), singer and TV star Jesse McCartney, Johnny Knoxville (Jack Ass USA), Matt Lucas and David Walliams (Little Britain), Kelly Slater (8 times World Surfing Champion), Justin Timberlake, Jess and Lisa Origliasso, Jimmy Barnes and John Williamson (Wildlife Warrior Ambassadors) plus well-known Australian personalities Abbie Cornish, Sigrid Thornton, David Campbell and Anthony Callea.
The shirt will soon be accompanying Melanie on her international travels and many more big names are sure to follow.

Koala Tales to benefit the Australian Wildlife Hospital
With the release of its new title, KLASSIC KOALAS: ANCIENT ABORIGINAL TALES IN NEW RETELLINGS, Koala Jo Publishing is supporting the Australian Wildlife Hospital, not only through purchase of the book, but also through purchase of wearable and gift items that display images from the book.
KLASSIC KOALAS: ANCIENT ABORIGINAL TALES IN NEW RETELLINGS, a collaboration among award-winning author Lee Barwood, the young students of the Central Ohio Art Academy under the direction of Donna Boiman, and artist and publisher Joanne Ehrich, is a collection of stories retold by Barwood and illustrated in full color with depictions of Australian animals and birds.
The author and artists have donated their royalties from sales of the book to the Hospital, and now Koala Jo Publishing has announced that sales of items featuring artwork from the book will also benefit the Hospital when purchased through the Aboriginal Tales store.
The Australian Wildlife Hospital has treated more than 900 koalas in the past 12 months, with these patients accounting for approximately 20 per cent of the total number of admissions. The Hospital's Koala Rescue Unit is the only one of its kind in Australia and is dedicated to koala rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and research.
Koala Jo Publishing was formed to raise awareness of the koala and to aid in its rescue and preservation. To that end, purchases of any merchandise bearing images from KLASSIC KOALAS: ANCIENT ABORIGINAL TALES IN NEW RETELLINGS will also benefit the Wildlife Warriors. A purchase not only shows you care, it truly does something to help.
